Silver was first found here in 1168, leading to the founding and rapid development of the town. The mining activity in the region meant Freiberg became a significant centre for business, culture and science. The oldest mining town in the Erzgebirge, it has many buildings of significance for the history of mining, including the Oberbergamt (Chief Mining Authority) and the Bergakademie (University of Technology and Mining); the latter was founded in 1765 and is therefore the oldest mining university in the world. It was here that the elements indium and germanium were discovered in the 19th century.
