Silver mining in the Brand-Erbisdorf Mining Landscape dates back to at least the 13th century. This As a result, this area became the most important site in the Freiberg Mining Field. For a time, over 20 % of Saxony’s entire silver yield was mined here. The extensive heaps and heap rows, along with the numerous surface buildings, indicate just how important mining was in the area. Notable examples include the Mendenschacht shaft system belonging to the Alte Mordgrube mine, and the Hörnigschacht shaft system at the Einigkeit Mine. One of the earliest and most extensive drainage systems in the Erzgebirge is the Thelersberger Adit, which has more than 50 km of drifts.
