In the western Erzgebirge near Eibenstock, numerous objects indicate the former presence of tin mining and processing. Right alongside each other in this impressive mining landscape are heaps from tin placer mining and water ditches for ore washing, providing ongoing evidence of above-ground tin placer mining. Excavated lodes and sinkholes are testament to underground tin mining. The extracted tin was processed in the surrounding iron mills, where a regional centre for tinplate production of European importance developed. The first mention of tin placer mining in the Eibenstock district is in 1378.
