Located in the Lugau-Oelsnitz mining district, the Karl Liebknecht shaft is the most architecturally significant shaft installation surviving from the Erzgebirge coal mining period of the 1920s. Its technical equipment has been preserved in its original condition. Oelsnitz also has important social and residential buildings from the coal mining period, including the mine rescue brigade housing estate, the Hans Marchwitza miners’ cultural centre, and the former mining school (now the vocational college for the Erzgebirgskreis district). The heaps from the former Deutschland coal shaft still shape the landscape around Oelsnitz today.
