The Hohe Esse brick chimney stack at the Halsbrücke smeltery was built between 1888 and 1889. Standing 140 metres high, it remains an important landmark to this day and was long considered the highest industrial stack in the world. Iron rings were attached during construction for the purposes of stabilisation. It is connected to the smelteries at the base of the valley by a 500-metre gas duct.
