There is evidence of mining in the area around the Sauschwart mine dating back to the late 15th century. From the mid-18th century, it became one of the most important sites in the district. Bismuth ore was extracted from the Sauschwart mine until 1929. Above the shaft is a coe with an annex that houses a converted hoisting machine dating back to 1949. Other nearby buildings include the administration and assembly building, built in 1835, and the foreman’s house, built in 1837. The adit mouth, construction of which began in 1487, has also survived. The shaft coe is open to visitors.
