Cobalt mining led to the emergence of another mining-related manufacturing sector. For a long time, the Erzgebirge dominated the production of blue pigments across the whole of Europe. The newest of the blue dye factories, of which there were once five, still stands in Zschorlau, where it was founded by Erasmus Schindler in 1650. The collection of monuments that remains shows that the smelting site was an independent community with production buildings, functional buildings and residential buildings. The manor house and the storehouse are two of the oldest blue dye production buildings in Saxony, and highly typical.
