Located in the Lugau-Oelsnitz mining district, the Karl Liebknecht shaft is the most architecturally significant shaft installation surviving from the Erzgebirge bituminous coal mining period of the 1920s. Its technical equipment has also been preserved in its original condition. Oelsnitz also features important social and residential buildings from the period of bituminous coal mining, such as the housing estate for the mine rescue brigade, the miners’ cultural centre Hans Marchwitza, and the former mining school (now the vocational college for the Erzgebirgskreis district). The heaps from the former Deutschland bituminous coal shaft still shape the landscape around Oelsnitz today.
