In the 13th century, activity in the Ehrenfriedersdorf area was dominated by the mining of tin placer deposits. Around 1230, as a result of mining in this early period, a mining settlement arose near the Sauberg mountain next to an existing farming settlement. Towards the end of the 13th century, tin placer mining gradually came to a standstill. The heaps of sand and gravel, which are waste rock from 13th and 14th century placer mining, bear witness to this original mining activity in the Greifenbach valley.
