The region around Ehrenfriedersdorf is one of the oldest medieval tin ore mining areas in Germany. Miners began extracting tin ores here in the early 13th century. The Röhrgraben manmade ditch is thought to have been constructed in the 14th century to supply motive water to the various mine workings. With the development of a new water-pumping engine, the “Ehrenfriedersdorfer Kunstgezeug”, mining restarted in the 16th century after a temporary break. The patented process was subsequently used across the entire mining industry. Numerous 19th and 20th century surface facilities are still in evidence, including the Sauberg main and pilot shaft and the ruins of the Morgenröth Sorting House, also on the Sauberg.
