Freiberg’s late-Gothic Granary is one of a number of storage buildings in the city. It forms part of Freiberg’s defensive fortifications. Facing away from the city, the massive outer walls have arrow slits. There are arrow loops on the first floor. Two towers adjoined the granary, one on each side. The Rote-Hirsch-Turm (red stag tower), which was demolished in 1864, stood to the east; the Kalkturm (lime tower), which still survives, stood to the west. The granary is a three-storey building with a mighty gabled roof. Much of the impressive late-Gothic roof structure is original to the time of construction, around 1510. The two original blind niche gables on this imposing building are also worth noting.
