The Rothschönberger Adit drainage gallery and the Freiberg Active Mining Water Management System (RWA) are two of Europe’s largest and most important water management systems. Consisting of an extensive network of manmade ditches, leats and ponds, the RWA water management system drove the water-powered machines in the mines, the ore dressing works, and the smelting works from the 16th century onwards. Constructed in 1844, the Rothschönberger Adit drainage gallery is the deepest and most important adit in the Freiberg Mining Field. Its construction marked the final stage in the global development of cross-regional drainage adits.
