Known as St. Katharinenberg im Buchholz when it was founded, Buchholz grew into a small mining settlement as a result of the extraction of its mineral resources. The hall church in Buchholz, with its culturally and historically important altarpiece with mining details, is testament to the silver mining period. The main altar of Annaberg’s Franciscan monastery is also located here. The former place of execution, in the middle of the mining district, also dates from the 16th century and is marked by two slabs of rock. In the final phase of mining, uranium ore extraction also produced terraconic heaps that are only preserved here in the Erzgebirge.
