Due to the discovery of silver in the Erzgebirge, Saxony’s economy flourished in the 16th century. Constructed in 1568 by Elector Augustus I of Saxony on the summit of Schellenberg, Augustusburg Hunting Lodge is an impressive record of the prosperity generated by mining. Due to its altitude, water could only be supplied by applying mining technology. Built by miners, its well descends 130 metres and is a testimony to the high standard of water-raising technology in the 16th century.
