One of the oldest and best-preserved mining landscapes in the Erzgebirge the "Hoher Forst" is located inside the Hartmansdorfer forest in the area of Langenweißbach, Kirchberg and Hartmannsdorf. Here, the mining of silver ore, and later copper ore, dates back to as early as 1306; a mining town emerged but was swiftly abandoned. There is evidence of mining activity in Hoher Forst continuing into the 20th century. Today, the numerous heaps and sinkholes bear testimony to the changing history of this mining area.
