Milestones in the World Heritage title application
More than 800 years of history, two countries, one heritage – 21 years and many milestones on the road to World Heritage status
– Inclusion of the “Mining and Cultural Landscape Erzgebirge” in the official German tentative list as proposed by the State Government of Saxony
– Foundation of the World Heritage Project Group at the Institute for Industrial Archaeology, History of Science and Technology (IWTG) at the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology
, December – A study by the World Heritage Project Group confirms the potential of the Mining Region Erzgebirge for inclusion in the World Heritage List as a cultural landscape – starting point for the step-by-step process of realisation
– Foundation of the “Förderverein Montanregion Erzgebirge e.V.” to provide support and finance for the project. In the very same year, the first contacts with the Czech Republic were made.
to 2012 – Selection and description of the intended World Heritage objects in the Saxon and Czech parts of the region through so-called implementation studies, including within the context of a cross-border EU research project
– Foundation of a non-profit sponsor company with the involvement of the two districts on the Czech side (“Montanregion Krušné hory – Erzgebirge gGmbH”)
– On the Saxon side, the sponsor company is taken over by three districts and 35 local authorities (“Welterbekonvent Erzgebirge”) – responsibility for organising and financing the application phase is thereby taken over by the region itself. The overall steering of the project is taken over by the “Wirtschaftsförderung Erzgebirge GmbH”.
/13 – Preparation of the complete World Heritage nomination dossier – by the project group at the IWTG with the WFE GmbH, under the supervision of a cross-border working party and the overall direction of the responsible state ministries
– Finalisation of the German-Czech World Heritage nomination “Mining Cultural Landscape Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří”
, January – Signing of the World Heritage nomination by both State Parties and submission to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Paris
, May – Foundation of the “Welterbe Montanregion Erzgebirge e. V.” association. The members – the districts of Erzgebirgskreis, Mittelsachsen and Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge as well as 33 towns and municipalities – establish the preconditions for the sponsorship, mediation and further development of the future World Heritage site and continue the successful regional cooperation. Takeover of commercial management by Wirtschaftsförderung Erzgebirge GmbH
, November – Intensive agreements with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) following a successful evaluation phase. The nomination is confirmed to be worthy of World Heritage status, however ICOMOS recommends clarification and qualification of the documentation in order to improve the chances of successful inclusion in the World Heritage list.
– Withdrawal of the nomination on the basis of the recommendation by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) regarding revision and re-clarification
– Revision and restructuring of the nomination
, January – Signing of the nomination by the responsible ministers from the Free State of Saxony and the Czech Republic, and resubmission to UNESCO. The nomination consists of 780 pages, 300 maps and over 800 illustrations.
