Located in the Lugau-Oelsnitz mining district, the Karl-Liebknecht-Schacht is the most architecturally significant shaft dating from Erzgebirge coal mining in the 1920s, with its technical equipment preserved in its original condition. Oelsnitz also has important social and residential buildings from the period of coal mining, such as the settlement of the mine rescue brigade, the miners’ cultural centre and school. The heap of the colliery Deutschland still shapes the landscape around Oelsnitz today.

Karl Liebknecht Shaft Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge

As one of the main supply shafts in the Lugau-Oelsnitz ore fields, the Karl Liebknecht shaft (Kaiserin Augusta shaft until 1946) was one of the most important shafts for coal mining in Saxony. Between 1922 and 1933 the approximately 50-metre-high supply tower was built as part of a modernisation programme. Following the completion of these works, the plant was one of the most modern shaft complexes in Saxony and became internationally known for a variety of technical solutions. With a yearly output of approximately one million tonnes of coal, it was one of the most productive shafts in Germany. The shaft was the last to be closed in the Lugau-Oelsnitz ore fields in 1975. Today a part of the shaft building is used for tourism as a mining museum.

Deutschlandschachthalde Shaft Heap

Along with the Karl-Liebknecht shaft supply tower, the Deutschlandschachthalde shaft heap is another symbol for the town of Oelsnitz in the Erzgebirge. The creation of the heap can be dated back to the Deutschlandschächte shafts I and II. The Deutschlandschacht I shaft was sunk to a depth of 699 metres between 1871 and 1874. The Deutschlandschacht II shaft was sunk between 1872 and 1877. In 1877 the two shafts were connected at a depth of 663 metres. In 1971 the Deutschlandschachthalde shaft heap was made accessible to the public. It has been made part of the Oelsnitz/Erzgebirge footpaths along with an observation tower.
